Gems

Gems is a composite photographic image, illuminated in a lightbox. Packets of analogue photographs are arranged in chronological order, representing a year in the life of the artist’s family. These photographic ‘gems’ are ordered and arranged like data sets. ‘Gems’ is also a reference to the mining of minerals, as well as the mining of data. The data that is revealed in this work is indexical information only: names, dates, places. What is hidden and cannot be seen is the ever-evolving dynamics and complexities of family life.
